Effect of feeding Linseed on the lipid profile of rats

Three varieties of linseed, viz. 'Janki', 'Surbhi' and 'Nagarkot' were fed to male albino rats for 40 days at two dilierentlevels (15 and 25%), so as to see their effect on the concentration of Total cholesterol (TC), Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C),High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and Triglyceride (TG). Asignificant (P<0.05) decrease was observed in TC, LDL-Cand TGlevels,whereas a significant (P<0.05) increase was seen in HDL-Clevel as compared to control groups. Maxnnum rise in the HDL-Clevel was observed in rats fed on a diet containing 25% of linseed. It is suggested that linseed might have beneficial effect in decreasing the elevated lipid levels in human beings also.
